So after a months of rumors and waiting, Apple and Steve Jobs finally revealed the iPad.
Its main characteristics are:
- 9.7 inch display, IPS technology, 1024×768-pixel resolution, 4:3 ratio
- Weight of just 1.5 pounds(0.68 kg) for the WiFi model, 1.6 pounds(0.73 kg) for the WiFi + 3G model
- Width is 7.47 inches(189.7 mm), height: 9.56 inches(242.8 mm), depth 0.5 inch(13.4 mm)
- The processor is 1GHz Apple A4 custom designed
- There are 3 models, differencing only in available capacity: 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, flash drive
- The battery is rechargeable lithium-polymer battery with claimed life of 10 hours(surfing, watching movies or listening to music)
- Built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and for the 3G model – UMTS/HSDPA and GSM/EDGE connectivity
- Built-in Accelerometer and Ambient light sensor
- The Input and Output are: 30 pin dock connector(similar to the iPhone, iPod Touch), 3.5-mm stereo headphone jack, built-in speakers, microphone, SIM card tray(WiFi + 3G model only)

The device uses the iPhone OSX, which is doesn’t require many resources and has proven itself.
It looks and sounds good, but I did not think that this is revolutionary product, because it lacks several very important features, and they are:
- No camera – for a device, which claims to be the perfect e-mail client, the impossibility to take picture in the moment and included in the mail is really intolerable
- No Flash – for three years in a row, the iPhone is criticized for the lack of it, and now the iPad will join the team
- No multitasking – every smartphone or more powerful device should have multitasking abilities
- No USB – one USB connector will greatly improve the usefulness and the joy of using the iPad
So there you go, the iPad at its current state, its nothing more than a really big iPhone or iPod Touch. I really hope that with the version 4.0 of the iPhone OS there will be multitasking available or Flash support. Although Flash is working buggy on the OSX and uses additional CPU cycles, Apple should make the effort at least for the iPad and make it work. What kind of tablet is it, if it can’t play a simple Flash, what kind of surfing experience will be if there are sites or part of sites which you can’t open or view.
As for the lack of multitasking, this feature is crucial. The lack of it means that you can’t listen to your favorite radio on Pandora or Slacker and browse the web or read a book. You can’t check your mail while playing some game, you have to close the current app to do something else. This is really frustrating. And while on the iPhone you can overlook it, on the device with the potential and possibilities of the iPad you can not.
But the good news is that, there is always next version. The iPad will get better in both software and hardware, because Apple now how to make great products.
And at last, I have to say the good things about the iPad. It will be really great for reading comics, the screen is big enough to display a comic book page in its actual size. Also all of the current App Store software will run at the iPad, which means that at the time you purchase it, you will have such great apps like Facebook, New York Times, Shazam, Evernote and many others. With all games you will have better experience, because of the bigger screen and more powerful CPU.
The iPad will be available in two models – with and without 3G connectivity. The only Wi-Fi model will be available after 60 and less days and will cost:
- 499$ for the 16GB
- 599$ for the 32GB
- 699$ for the 64GB
and the model with Wi-Fi and 3G will be available for purchase after 90 days and will cost:
- 629$ for the 16GB
- 729$ for the 32GB
- 829$ for the 64GB
When the device comes out, I am sure that more and more new things will come out, more criticism and more praises also. Expect all of it on this blog.
